The rain did not bring anything into your house. It switched something back on that was already there — and working out what decides whether cleaning the carpet will help at all.

Almost every house in this part of South Carolina does this at some point. Two wet days in July and a room that was fine last week smells like a basement. It is not imagination and it is not the rain washing anything in.
Three things have to be present for a musty smell: something organic to feed on, microorganisms to do the feeding, and water. The first two are in every carpet on earth — skin cells, food residue, pet dander, spilled drinks, soil, and the bacteria and mold spores that come with all of it. What is normally missing is the third.
Rain supplies it indirectly. Outdoor humidity climbs, indoor humidity follows, and carpet and pad are absorbent — they take moisture out of the air and hold it. Once the material is damp enough, dormant microorganisms become active and produce the gases responsible for the smell. That is the entire mechanism, and it explains the two things people find confusing: why the smell arrives without any visible water, and why it goes away again on its own for weeks at a time.
Old spills make it much worse. Anything that soaked in and dried — a drink, milk, food, and above all pet urine — leaves a residue that is hygroscopic, meaning it actively pulls water out of humid air. Those spots go damp before the rest of the room does and smell first and strongest.
This is the part worth spending five minutes on, because it decides whether cleaning the carpet is money well spent or money wasted.

If the smell is not strongest at the carpet, cleaning the carpet will not fix it. A cleaner who takes that job without saying so is selling you a diagnosis you did not get.
A lot of Aiken housing sits over a vented crawlspace, and there is a piece of received wisdom about them that is exactly backwards in this climate.
The instinct is that opening the vents in summer lets the space breathe and dries it out. In a hot, humid summer it often does the opposite. Warm outdoor air holding a great deal of moisture flows into a crawlspace where the ground and the surfaces are noticeably cooler, and when moist air meets a cool surface it gives up its water. You get condensation on the joists, the ducts and the underside of the subfloor — in the space directly beneath your carpet.
From there the smell rises with normal air movement through the floor, and it presents as a carpet problem in the room above. Signs worth checking: a damp or earthy smell at the crawlspace hatch, visible condensation or standing water, a vapor barrier that is torn or missing, or insulation sagging away from the subfloor. Those are building repairs — grading, gutters, vapor barrier, and in many cases sealing the space rather than venting it — not cleaning jobs. Your thermostat fan has two settings, ON and AUTO. On AUTO, the blower runs only while the system is cooling. On ON, it runs continuously — and that is the problem. An air conditioner dehumidifies by condensing water out of the air onto a cold evaporator coil, where it drips away. When the cooling cycle ends, that coil is still wet. If the fan keeps running, it blows household air across a wet coil and re-evaporates the water straight back into the house.
So a system set to ON can remove moisture for ten minutes and hand a good share of it back over the next twenty. Set the fan to AUTO.
Two related points. An air conditioner that is oversized for the house cools the air quickly and shuts off before it has run long enough to remove much moisture — the house feels cold and clammy at the same time, which is the classic symptom. And a blocked condensate drain leaves standing water inside the unit, which produces its own smell delivered through every vent in the house.
A hygrometer costs very little and turns this from an argument into a measurement. The EPA's guidance is to keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent, and ideally between 30 and 50 percent. Plenty of Aiken houses run above 60 in July without anybody knowing.
What moves the number:
There is also a health reason to care beyond the smell. Dust mites and mold both need humidity to thrive, and both are common indoor allergy triggers. Bringing a house from 65 percent down to 45 makes it a less hospitable place for both.
If the smell is strongest at the fiber and worst in particular spots, the fuel is in the carpet and pad, and removing it removes the smell. Hot water extraction flushes out the residues the microorganisms are living on, and thorough extraction plus fast drying leaves nothing behind to restart the cycle. That is a genuine fix rather than a mask.
Two conditions. First, it must actually dry — a cleaning that leaves the pad damp in a humid house recreates the problem it was meant to solve, which is why extraction quality and airflow matter more here than in a dry climate. Second, if the source is old pet urine, ordinary cleaning will not reach it; that needs treatment at the depth the urine reached, covered on the pet page.
Deodorizing sprays deserve a plain warning. They add fragrance and remove nothing, so the smell returns with the next humid week and you have lost the ability to tell whether anything is improving.
If there has been an actual leak, an overflow or storm water in the house, this stops being a comfort question. The EPA's guidance is direct: material dried within 24 to 48 hours of a leak or spill will in most cases not grow mold. Past that window the calculation changes, and wet carpet pad is one of the least forgiving materials in a house.
The other thing worth knowing is that killing mold is not the same as removing it, and the EPA says so plainly — dead mold still causes problems and still has to be cleaned out. Anyone offering to spray your carpet to solve a mold problem is not solving it.

Because the smell is moisture-activated rather than rain-caused. Dried residues in the carpet and pad pull water out of humid air, and the bacteria and mold already present become active again once they have it. Nothing new arrived with the rain — the humidity simply switched something back on that was dormant.
The EPA recommends keeping indoor humidity below 60 percent, ideally between 30 and 50 percent. A cheap hygrometer will tell you where you actually are, and in an Aiken summer a lot of houses sit above 60 without anyone realizing.
No, and this is the most common mistake here. Outdoor air in an Aiken summer usually holds more moisture than indoor air, so opening windows brings the problem in rather than letting it out. Run the air conditioning instead — dehumidifying is what it does whether or not you want the cooling.
If the fan is set to ON rather than AUTO, it keeps blowing air across a wet evaporator coil after the cooling has stopped, which re-evaporates the water the system just removed and sends it back into the house. Setting the thermostat fan to AUTO fixes it and costs nothing.
It depends where the smell is coming from. If it is residue in the carpet and pad, cleaning removes the fuel and the smell goes with it. If the source is a damp crawlspace, a slab leak or mold in the structure, cleaning the carpet changes nothing and you will have paid to confirm the diagnosis.
Get down and smell the carpet directly in the suspect area, then smell it again a foot above the floor. A source in the carpet is strongest at the fiber. A source below or around it — crawlspace, wall, HVAC — tends to be diffuse through the room, stronger near a vent or a baseboard, and often stronger in a room nobody uses.
Describe where the smell is strongest and when it shows up, and you'll get an honest read — including "that one isn't a carpet job" when it isn't.
