For a lot of houses in this town, March is the month the guest room gets used. Add the Masters in Augusta the following week and you have a four-week stretch where half of Aiken is either hosting family, renting the house out, or both.
The single most useful thing on this page is the timeline, because almost every problem people have with this is a scheduling problem rather than a cleaning problem.

Three to five days is the sweet spot, and both ends of it matter. Carpet takes four to eight hours to dry properly, and a March day in Aiken can be damp enough to stretch that. Cleaning on the morning guests arrive means they walk into a house that smells faintly of wet carpet, with furniture still on blocks. Cleaning three weeks out means paying to clean carpet that then gets three more weeks of ordinary traffic before anyone sees it.
The other reason for the gap is wicking. Spots that soaked in deeply can travel back up to the surface a day or two after cleaning as the carpet dries. That is normal and fixable, but only if there is time on the calendar to fix it. Three days of margin turns a disaster into a phone call.
March is the crunch. Three race Saturdays back to back, followed immediately by Masters week in early April when short-term rentals across the CSRA turn over at once, means every cleaner in the area is working the same two weeks of Fridays and Saturdays.
Two to three weeks ahead gets you the slot you want. A few days ahead gets you whatever is left, which in that stretch is often a Tuesday. If you rent the house out for either event, book both the pre-arrival and post-departure visits at the same time — the turnover slot is the hardest one to get late.
If the budget or the calendar only stretches to part of the house, spend it in this order. Guests form their impression in the first thirty seconds and in the room they sleep in, and almost nowhere else.
Two things worth adding if the house is older. Grey lines along the baseboards are filtration soiling rather than dirt, and they can be treated but rarely disappear — do not book that expecting a miracle two days before company arrives. You have just paid to clean the carpet before the muddiest weekend of the year. A little defense goes a long way.
It will. The response in the first two minutes decides whether it is a mark or a memory.
Blot, never rub. Rubbing drives the spill deeper and abrades the fiber, and a rubbed spot often ends up permanently fuzzy even after the color comes out. Press plain white towels down firmly, stand on them, and work from the outside of the spill inward so it does not spread.
Red wine: blot hard, add a little cool water, keep blotting until the towel stops lifting color. No heat — heat sets it. Do not reach for the salt, and be careful with home remedies from the internet on anything you care about.
Tailgate food and grease: lift the solids off with a spoon edge first, then blot. Scraping sideways just spreads it.
Mud from the course: counterintuitively, leave it alone. Let it dry completely, break it up, vacuum out the loose material, and only then treat what is left. The pre-event clean is the one everybody thinks about. The one that actually saves carpet is the week after the last Saturday.
Four weeks of visitors leaves ground-in sand at the base of the pile, spills that were blotted but not extracted, and a general dullness across every traffic lane. Sand keeps abrading for as long as it sits there, and a spot that was blotted will usually wick back and re-appear. Both are far easier and cheaper to deal with in early April than in July, and April is a quiet month to book.

Both, if the house is hosting properly. Before is about presentation. After is about damage control — red wine, tailgate food and mud off a grass course are the three things that come home from a race day, and they are far easier to remove in the first week than in the second.

For a guest weekend, often yes — a clean worn carpet looks cared for and a dirty one does not. Just know what you are buying. Cleaning removes soil; it does not restore fiber that has been walked flat, so a grey traffic lane will still read grey afterward.
