North Augusta is its own city rather than a neighborhood of Aiken — incorporated in 1906, around 24,000 people, and sitting on the north bank of the Savannah River directly across from Augusta, Georgia. Almost all of it is in Aiken County, which is worth saying plainly because the name confuses people: the river it faces separates South Carolina from Georgia, not North Augusta from Aiken. Aiken itself is a short drive east.
It grew the way much of this county grew. The Hampton Terrace Hotel brought wealthy northern visitors from 1903 until it burned on the last day of 1916, and then the Savannah River Plant arrived in the 1950s and the city expanded from a few hundred acres to several thousand. That leaves a genuinely mixed housing stock — older homes near the original center, a lot of postwar and later subdivisions, and newer riverfront building around Riverside Village and Hammond's Ferry.
Aiken's classic carpet problem is white sand, which is abrasive but comes out with vacuuming and extraction because the particles are relatively large and inert. Nearer the river you deal with the other CSRA soil as well: red clay off yards, ball fields, trails and construction sites.
Clay is a different problem in three ways. The particles are microscopically fine, so they travel deep into the yarn instead of sitting at the base of the pile. They carry iron oxide, which is what makes them orange and what makes them stain rather than just soil. And wet clay is sticky, so it spreads under pressure instead of lifting.
What that means practically, and this is the part that costs people carpet: do not scrub wet clay. Rubbing it forces those fine particles further into the fiber and widens the mark, turning something removable into an orange cast that survives cleaning. Let it dry hard, break it up, vacuum out everything loose, and only then treat what is left with water. A professional extraction after that will usually finish the job. A professional extraction over ground-in wet clay often will not.
The other half of the answer is at the door. Matting long enough for four or five steps catches the great majority of what would otherwise come in on shoes, and it does more for clay than any product does after the fact.
Anywhere in the CSRA is humid in summer; sitting on the river does not help. Carpet and pad are absorbent, so they pull moisture from humid air and hold onto it, which is why a closed-up house can feel clammy underfoot without a drop having been spilled.
That matters after cleaning. Extraction removes most of the water but not all of it, and how fast the rest leaves depends entirely on airflow and the moisture already in the air. Four to eight hours is normal. Longer than that on a regular basis is a sign of under-extraction, and carpet that stays damp long enough starts to smell.
Two things help and one does not. Running the air conditioning helps, because dehumidifying is what an air conditioner does whether or not you need the cooling. Fans moving air across the floor help. Opening the windows in July does not help — outdoor air is wetter than indoor air and you are importing the problem. North Augusta has a real commercial base for its size — the Georgia Avenue side of town, professional offices, and the newer restaurant and hospitality space around Riverside Village and the ballpark. Commercial carpet is a different kind of work from residential and is quoted differently.
The short version: it is usually priced by square foot rather than by room, it is scheduled around your hours rather than ours, and the right method depends on the traffic. Glue-down commercial carpet in a busy corridor is often better served by interim maintenance between deep extractions than by extraction alone.
