Here is why. The EPA's guidance is plain — dry water-damaged materials within 24 to 48 hours and in most cases mold will not grow. Miss that window and you are no longer dealing with wet carpet. You are dealing with mold in a building, which is a bigger job, a more expensive one, and one where the carpet is often the least of it.
Aiken makes the window tighter than it would be elsewhere. Drying depends on how much moisture the surrounding air can absorb, and in a Carolina summer the air is already close to full. The same burst supply line that dries out in two days in a dry climate takes longer here, which is exactly why fans alone do not work and why dehumidification is not an upsell.
Safety first, then damage limitation. None of this requires equipment.
Main shutoff if it is a supply line, the valve behind the appliance if it is a washer or dishwasher, the toilet stop if it is a toilet. Everything else waits until the source is off. If you do not know where the main is, find it now rather than during the emergency.
Standing water near outlets, extension leads or anything plugged in at floor level is a shock risk. If water has reached outlets or you need to walk through it to reach the panel, do not — call an electrician or the utility. No carpet is worth this.
Lift furniture or put foil or plastic under the legs. Wooden legs bleed stain into wet carpet within hours and metal ones rust-mark, and both are permanent. Move rugs off wet carpet, and books, boxes and anything cardboard out of the room entirely.
A domestic vacuum is not rated for water and using one is a genuine electrocution risk. A wet-dry shop vac is fine if you have one, and will remove far less than you think — but anything you take out now is less to dry later.

The categories come from the water damage restoration industry's standard, and every legitimate operator works to them. If somebody offers to dry a sewage backup in place, that is not a bargain, it is a reason to call somebody else.
The part that catches people out: the category is not fixed at the moment of the spill. Clean water becomes gray water by default once it has been sitting, typically inside 24 to 48 hours, and gray water degrades further from there. A burst supply line found the same morning and the same line found on Monday after a weekend away are not the same event, and they do not have the same answer about what can be kept.

Pad is replaced far more readily than carpet for one simple reason: it is porous, it holds many times its weight in water, it cannot be verified clean in place, and it is the cheapest part of the floor. Replacing it costs less than the risk of leaving it.
Drying a room while water is still arriving is pointless. If the source is not already off, that is the first job, and where it is a plumbing failure you are told plainly that a plumber comes before a dryer does.
Clean, gray or black. This is not paperwork — it decides whether your carpet and pad are saved or removed, and doing it wrong in either direction either costs you a floor you could have kept or leaves contamination under one you should not have.
Water travels further than it looks. Moisture meters and a thermal camera find where it went under walls, into the pad beyond the visible edge, and along the tack strip into the next room. The wet area is almost always bigger than the dark patch.
Water removed mechanically is water you do not have to evaporate. Deep extraction with a weighted tool pulls water out of the pad through the carpet and is worth days of air movement. This is the step that decides how long the whole job takes.
Category 1 caught fast usually dries in place. Category 2 means the pad comes out. Category 3 means carpet and pad both go. You will be told which and why, and shown the meter readings rather than asked to take it on faith.
Air movers to lift moisture off surfaces and a dehumidifier to take it out of the air, or the moisture simply moves from the carpet to the drywall. In Aiken's humidity, air movers without dehumidification is a common and expensive mistake.

Read the last three rows together. Drying clean water is $4–$6 a square foot. Remediating mold in the same area is $15–$30. The difference between those two numbers is a phone call made on day one instead of day four.
Water-damage work is quoted on site rather than from a price list because the cost is driven by things nobody can assess over the phone: how many square feet are actually wet as opposed to visibly wet, what category the water is, how many air movers and dehumidifiers the space needs, and how many days they have to run. What you should expect is a written scope and a figure before equipment goes in, not a meter running and a total at the end.
Category is how dirty the water is. Class is how much of your building it got into. Both go on the quote.

The HVAC condensate line deserves its own mention here. In an Aiken summer an air handler pulls gallons of water out of the air every day, and when the drain blocks that water has to go somewhere. It is the most common cause of “where did this wet patch come from” in this climate.

A ring on a ceiling is the bottom of a much larger wet area above it. By the time it shows through paint, the insulation and the subfloor above have been wet for a while.
What is under your carpet changes the drying job completely, and in Aiken County you will find all three.
Concrete slab. Concrete is porous and it absorbs water, then gives it back slowly for days after the surface reads dry. Slab jobs need longer drying and readings taken into the concrete rather than off it. The upside is that a slab does not rot and it does not warp.
Wood subfloor over a crawlspace. Common here, and the one that needs the most care. Water goes through the carpet, through the pad, through the seams in the subfloor and into a crawlspace that in a Carolina summer is already humid. Drying the room from above while the underside stays wet is how a floor gets dried twice. Where the crawlspace is accessible, it gets checked — and where a crawlspace has standing water or saturated insulation, that is its own job.
Second floor over a ceiling. Water on an upper floor is a ceiling problem downstairs before it is a carpet problem upstairs. Trapped water above a ceiling has to be released and dried, and that usually means a small hole made deliberately rather than a large one made by gravity a day later.
This is also why the subfloor gets moisture-read separately from the carpet. Carpet dries from the top down. A floor that reads dry at the pile can sit over a subfloor holding water for another week, and that is the water that causes the smell in August.
Every one of these is something reasonable people do while trying to help.
The single most expensive decision available. Carpet dries on top long before the pad and subfloor do, so a floor that feels dry on the surface at day three can still be soaked underneath — and by then the window has closed.
Air movers evaporate moisture into the room. If nothing removes it from the air, it condenses somewhere else — into drywall, into baseboards, into the ceiling below. In Aiken's humidity this is the classic way a small problem becomes a big one.
It feels like the right instinct and it is backwards. Outdoor air in an Aiken August carries more moisture than the air inside your air-conditioned house. Closing up and running the AC dries faster than opening up does.
