South Aiken is where most of the city's newer housing went. The neighborhoods off Whiskey Road, Hitchcock Drive and Dougherty Road are largely single-family homes built from the 1970s onward with a lot of construction after 2000, and owner-occupancy here is among the highest in the country. People buy these houses and stay in them.
That changes what carpet cleaning is for. In a rental you clean to hand it back. In a house you plan to be in for twenty years, you clean to keep the floor from wearing out early — which in this part of Aiken means dealing with sand.
Hitchcock Woods sits on South Aiken's doorstep — about 2,100 acres, one of the largest urban forests in the country, with roughly 65 miles of sandy trails. Riders, dog walkers and runners use it daily, and all of them carry some of it home.
That matters more than it sounds. Aiken sits in the Sandhills rather than the Piedmont, so what comes in on boots and paws is coarse, granite-derived sand rather than the red clay covering most of South Carolina. Clay stains the surface and looks bad. Sand cuts — it works down between the fibers and grinds at the base of the yarn with every footstep, wearing carpet from the inside out long before it looks dirty enough to bother with.
