The company will genuinely clean three rooms for $99, but it is a lead price rather than a job price. The gap is closed on site through heavy-soil surcharges, pet treatment quoted on the spot, protector sold as essential, and a room-size cap you were not told about. In everyday use, yes — people say “steam cleaning” and mean hot water extraction. Technically no steam is involved: hot water is forced into the pile under pressure and vacuumed straight back out, taking the soil with it.
Up to three quarters of what is in a carpet is dry particulate. Put water on it before removing it and you have made mud, which then has to be flushed out of the fiber instead of lifted off it. It is the most common corner cut in this trade and it is invisible to the customer.
The gap between spraying the pre-spray and extracting it. The chemistry needs minutes to break the bond between soil and fiber. Spraying and immediately extracting looks like the same job and does far less.
