The blocks in between downtown and the Whiskey Road corridor are the part of Aiken that got built in a hurry. When the Savannah River Plant went up in the early 1950s the town needed thousands of houses in a few years, and modest two- and three-bedroom homes went in across subdivision after subdivision — Crosland Park, Virginia Acres, Forest Heights, Aiken Estates and a long list of others. Building carried on through the 1960s and 70s, and infill has been filling gaps ever since.
It is the practical middle of town rather than a golf community or a historic district, and it is where a lot of Aiken actually lives. For carpet cleaning that history matters in ways a newer subdivision does not have to think about.
If there is a dark grey band following the wall around a room, or a stripe under a closed door, or dark edging on the lip of every stair tread, that is filtration soiling — and it is the single most misdiagnosed thing in an older house.
What is happening: air is moving through the gap where the carpet meets the wall, usually because the house is slightly pressurized or depressurized by its heating and cooling system and the envelope is not tight. The carpet edge becomes the last filter that air passes through, and the pile strains fine airborne particles out of it — soot from cooking, candles, fireplaces, and outdoor combustion. Over years it builds a line.
Two honest points about it. First, it is not a sign anyone failed to vacuum; the pattern follows airflow, not foot traffic, which is why it appears in rooms nobody uses. Second, it does not always come out. The particles are far finer than ordinary soil and sit deep in the yarn, so a specialist edge treatment usually lightens it noticeably and sometimes clears it, but a cleaner promising it will vanish is guessing. You should be told before the work which of those you are likely to get.
Reducing it going forward is a house problem rather than a carpet problem — better filtration in the HVAC system, changing filters on schedule, and sealing gaps where the airflow is getting through.
A lot of postwar building here is slab-on-grade, and plenty of the rest sits over a vented crawlspace. Both change how carpet should be handled and neither changes the price.
On a slab, moisture has nowhere to go downward. Concrete holds and gives back water vapor, so carpet laid on it dries from the top only, and a job finished with the pad still wet stays wet far longer than it would over a wood subfloor. In an Aiken summer, with the humidity outside already high, that is how a room ends up smelling musty a week after it was cleaned. The fix is not a lighter clean — underwetting leaves soil behind — it is proper extraction and real airflow afterward, with the air conditioning running rather than the windows open.
Over a crawlspace, the thing to watch is whether the musty smell is coming from the carpet at all. If a room smells damp and the carpet is not visibly soiled, the source is often below the floor rather than in it, and cleaning the carpet will not fix it. Add to both of these the ordinary Aiken problem — sandy soil tracked in from the yard, which is abrasive and sits at the base of the pile grinding at the fiber every time somebody walks over it.
Older carpet raises a fair question: is a clean going to do anything? Sometimes the answer is no, and you deserve to hear that before paying rather than after.
Cleaning removes soil, and soil is most of what makes carpet look tired — so a carpet that is dull, greyed in the traffic lanes and flat-looking usually comes back further than people expect. What cleaning cannot do is undo physical damage. Fiber that has been walked flat and abraded until it has lost its twist will not stand back up; that is wear, not dirt. Carpet that ripples or bubbles has delaminated or lost tension and needs stretching or replacing. Sun-faded color does not come back. Old pet contamination that has gone through into the pad is a different job and sometimes a replacement job.
On a rental turnover in particular it is worth being blunt about which of those you are looking at, because the choice is usually between one clean and one replacement, not between cleaning and doing nothing.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and you should be told which. Cleaning removes soil. It does not restore fiber that has been physically worn flat in a traffic lane, and it does not re-bond carpet that has delaminated and ripples underfoot. If that is what you have, cleaning buys appearance for a while and nothing more.
